Transforming Into Something New

That moment when you pause, take a step back, and notice where you are on your journey.

I was preparing my morning tea to start my day and I noticed the quote dangling from my tea as it was steeping. It said, “Accept who you are in this moment, but acknowledge who you want to become.”

This message was so powerful and came at the perfect time. I have been in a “Chrysalis Moment” as I like to call them. These are the moments when we know that a lot of changes are happening within, sometimes they are pleasant, and other times they are uncomfortable. For me, I have been sitting with the question, “How can I help the world, especially in education?” I see where I am at, but really want to be so much further with how I can contribute to help our education (and world) transform.

When I hear the news, see students, and engage with teachers and leaders, there has been a consistent theme of feeling disheartened. The climate within schools seems to be spiraling out of control and educators, leaders, and families are grasping at any solution to try to stop the spiral. Behaviors are escalating, emotions are reacting, relationships are tarnishing, and so much more. Our schools should be a place of respite for all members of the learning community–but many are not. I feel pain writing this, but it is the truth and reality for many schools worldwide.

Over the past few months, insight after insight has come through. I keep following the inspirations and taking action to create them into reality. Most importantly, I have begun to shift the purpose and intention of my company, The Butterfly Within. It has been going through its own chrysalis moments, but so much beauty is unfolding and it is ready to spread its wings into the world to make an impact.

Originally, my company was developed to create a space for well-being practices for all. However, as it grew (as a caterpillar), it shifted into focusing on the well-being of educators. As it continues to grow it has been really focusing on the changemakers in education–the changemakers who support adults and children in the school from administrators, coaches, team leads, specialists, committee leads, educators, etc. The changemakers who are ready to take the next step as what I call “Heart-CenterED Changemakers”. However, given the deep responsibility and courageous action that needs to happen with this type of approach, our heart-centered changemakers have often lost their confidence because it is a different way of leading that challenges our old models in education.

Then I received this fortune cookie the same week: “Change is the compass that guides you to uncharted territories of potential.” I knew that THIS was my sign to commit to who I needed to become in the world and focus on creating this into reality for all schools.

Moment after moment, the path continues to unfold as I use change and uncertainty as my compass for potential. Mentors and opportunities keep coming into my life to support this vision. The time is NOW for our Heart-CenterED Changemakers to unfold our wings and rise to create courageous, calm, and connected schools.

Ironically, this commitment aligned with when I had scheduled my haircut to donate my hair for the first time. It was a beautiful symbol of commitment to change to help others on the outside, that aligned with the commitment on the inside.

I am looking forward to this journey together with you and I cannot wait for what is to come in education as we embrace this transformation to become The Butterfly Within™ us all!
